Great backlighting tips!

Your body is a work of art, why do you hide it?? I bet if you solved how to artfully show everything uncensored, your viewers would skyrocket. I suspect at this point of your YouTube career your modesty is your greatest weakness. Good luck. <3

Harry Balls (2 years ago)

J. Anthony Thompson (2 years ago)

darn she cute
Sangyong LEE (2 years ago)
Bach and you. Lovely!
Hedshotz (2 years ago)
This is something I have been struggling with lately, almost getting right, but not quite, the settings on the photos is very useful, and I feel inspired to have another shot at it now, especially as I've not thought of using my 85mm for it. As always Imogen and Mike , another great video :)
Hedshotz (2 years ago)
I will indeed, I was going to do it tonight, but the sun has disappeared for the time being.

JuJusKitchen (3 years ago)
I love her accent.
Gimpy newman (3 years ago)
are these pics that you provided with the different setting straight out of camera or are they edited at all? every time I try to shoot with that much light in the background I get a great silhouette LOL. Thanks for the videos I really like watching the different poses and your setting you used.
Anthony Ring (3 years ago)
+Gimpy newman I realise this was made a month ago, but are you shooting manual or auto? auto tries to balence all the light for the medium. It tries to save as much highlight detail as possible, leaving well.. the people.. underexposed when shooting into the light. Cameras dont have the dynamic range we people have so you sometimes have to blow those highlights way out inorder to get the person exposed correctly. Any of the auto settings, A, P, S, etc.. will never do that. They dont know what youre trying to do, only you do. (: intagram @anthonyring.raw

no update about the music?
Gilbert Garces (3 years ago)
Still incredibly breathtaking:-) You could only be wearing like an old paper bag and you would still make it work. Not saying you should do that lol! I still am waiting for the return of crazed sociopath Emma tapes. Hopefully you'll consider making more, they were so eerie but fun
wesley weeks (3 years ago)
Great job Emma!
Rainer Büsching (3 years ago)
Thank you, I always take a look at your website and feel inspired :)
Chris Barker (3 years ago)
Lovely, but also very useful.  I liked being able to watch your variety of poses as you moved through them, Emma.
Zarli Win (3 years ago)
Lovely images, but I would have loved to have heard more about how Mark dealt with the light and what he might have done in post. Maybe make the video longer by adding a segment after the shoot to talk in more detail?
Chuck Loh (3 years ago)
Thanks for sharing. Always great inspiration. AS others have mentioned, there are more tricks to what is seen in order to get exposures like that (electors, flashes, spot metering, etc.) Perhaps sharing that information would help us all! Thanks!
ARVO (3 years ago)
G'day is emma with a modeling agency?  agent?
Furry Emma (3 years ago)
Very good video! Emma is absolutely gorgeous and its always a pleasure to watch her videos! These are beautiful! Very sensual!
Raymond Hamby (3 years ago)
It would have been nice to see a little less depth of field in a few pictures. Other wise why go to such a beautiful location only to not show it with all the blurriness. You could still have it just not so much. Great shoot though.
Rob Chang (3 years ago)
I agree with the other comments about showing how Mark dealt with the high-contrast back-lit situation. Maybe in future episodes, an assistant/friend can shoot the video while Mark is taking the photos, so we can see how he works with the models, as well as how he deals with lighting modifiers in various situations (reflector, fill-flash, portable LED lights, scrim, etc.). If there's no one to help shoot the video, then just set the video camera on a tripod.
Joseph Rose (3 years ago)
+Rob “Lunatique” Chang Also wondering how Mark was getting balanced lighting and prevent the model being backlit. The video is fair balanced as well so makes me wonder if enough overcast to scatter the setting sun.
John McConnell (3 years ago)
+Rob Chang it's softer light when the sun is setting you have that golden hour effect going so it's not your typical hard light with dark shadows as you'd get shooting mid day
John McConnell (3 years ago)
+WeeklyImogen yeah i was about to say i didnt think any light modifiers were used here.
Rob Chang (3 years ago)
+WeeklyImogen Really? I guess Mark must have raised the shadows by +2~3 stops when he did the post-processing, otherwise the model would be a dark silhouette, or the background would be totally blown out. Does Mark prefer to do that (post-processing) over using lights/lighting modifiers?
Maui8888 (3 years ago)
Lovely shots Mark and Emma,  and yes you have to seize the moment (I say looking out the window on what must be the *wettest* day in July :( ).   Mark, a few people have commented on your move to the 6D.  I notice these shots were taken with an 85mm lens.  Do you find you use that lens more now (than the 50mm?).  550D + 50mm ---> 6D + 85mm ...makes sense from a crop factor point of view.

Beautiful shots.  Wish you had talked a bit about adjusting for the sun behind the model.
lexmax08 (3 years ago)
Loved the video but I do want to request a different piano piece for the next pose video to mix it up. Appreciate you sharing the camera settings.
liang yu (3 years ago)
looks like Mark has upgraded his camera from old 550D to a new 6D. is that true? LOL
Maui8888 (3 years ago)
+liang yu Yes, the 6D has been out a few times over the last few months going by the videos...
steve atesh (3 years ago)
Great video Emma, super pictures too. I have a similar shoot coming up soon so this was a big help thanks :)
Rymzor (3 years ago)
A reflector would have been awesome for this
Spawn Brimstone (3 years ago)
Lovely, Emma!
Amro Hadi (3 years ago)
Nice to see that Mark have changed his equipment ...canon 6D is a powerful machine ... Mark + canon 6D + imogen <3 & emma = stunning photography !!
David Wood (3 years ago)
Do you/did you work with any fill-in flash in these kinds of situations? I was actually surprised the back-lit shots turned out quite as well as they did, though I guess the background was overexposed and blurred on purpose. I'm really new to photography, so any thoughts would be appreciated.
Luis Tunon, Jr. (3 years ago)
